Hospice sponsors camp for bereaved children

CARLSBAD — Hospice of the North Coast will present its annual Healing Outdoor Play Experience retreat known as Camp H.O.P.E. from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at Green Oak Ranch in Vista. Camp H.O.P.E. is supported in part by The Country Friends, Tri-City Healthcare District and the Health and Harmony Foundation, which provided 10 camp scholarships for military families and bereaved in the community.
The retreat provides therapeutic healing in a fun, al fresco environment for grieving children who are at least 7 years of age, and their families. The registration fee is $50 per family. Scholarships are available for those unable to pay. Space is limited and pre-registration is required; camper families can register online at www.hospicenorthcoast.org or call (760) 431-4100 for information.
To ensure that all who wish to experience the day of healing can attend, regardless of financial circumstances, HNC seeks donations from individuals and organizations; $200 will sponsor one family’s participation at the camp. Contact Director of Bereavement Ti Johnson at tjohnson@hospicenorthcoast.org to contribute a gift in any amount.
The theme of this year’s Camp H.O.P.E. is “Heeling” Hearts. Activities focus on canine therapy and encounters with gentle animals. In addition to pet therapy, children and adult campers will enjoy music, expressive arts, massage, Reiki, yoga and talk therapy.
HNC Executive Director Nerice Kaufman said, “After the death of a loved one, people often feel not only bereaved, but overwhelmed, isolated and physically and emotionally exhausted. Children, especially, are susceptible to feeling bewildered, lost and alone. Connecting to animals in a loving, natural and safe environment can be therapeutic on many levels and can help grieving children adapt to a new normal. Just having an animal to touch and hug can help someone who is hurting get on the path to healing.”
Nonprofit Hospice of the North Coast was established in 1980 to fill the need for comprehensive, compassionate hospice care in North County San Diego. Since its inception, it has grown in services, staff and clients; it currently provides a full spectrum of programs to terminally ill clients and their families, including bereavement support. To fulfill its mission of maintaining dignity, comfort and highest quality of life for those it serves, regardless of ability to pay, HNC hosts fundraising events, operates a family support camp and resale shop, and maintains a cadre of volunteers.
Hospice of the North Coast is at 2525 Pio Pico Drive, Suite 301, in Carlsbad. Call (760) 431-4100 or visit hospicenorthcoast.org.
