Niels Lund named Peacemaker

ENCINITAS — Chosen for his passion, dedication and drive, Encinitas Rotarian Niels Lund is the recipient of this year’s Encinitas Rotary Club Peacemaker Award, an honor that distinguishes the one person whose actions have had the most impact on improving cultural understanding.
Whether organizing Youth Exchange Summer Camps or driving educational programs at local schools, Lund is well known as a tireless worker for the good of others.
In 2010, Lund visited Cambodia where he spent three weeks visiting schools. Included was a visit to an orphanage that cares for children who survive by scrounging recyclable items from a garbage dump in Phnom Penh. Taking photos of how these children exist, Lund brought the stories home to share with students at Paul Ecke Central and El Camino Creek Elementary Schools. Out of that experience, Lund has collaborated with the Del Mar/Solana Beach Rotary Clubs to create the Youth Exchange Summer Camp.
Since 1981, Rotary International has been recognizing Peacemakers from all corners of the world. Past recipients have included nelson Mandela and Jimmy Carter, along with a number of lesser-known activists intent on creating a more peaceful world existence for future generations.
For further information, contact Rotary Club of Encinitas President Roger Bolus at (760) 634-2807. The club meets on Wednesday, at noon at the Elks Club, 1393 Windsor Road, Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
