Men’s competitive soccer season comes to a close

CARLSBAD—Carlsbad Competitive adult men’s soccer spring season came to a close May 23, when team San Diego United beat Coastal Select 2-0 in the league’s Cup Finals.
Manny Villalita, who organized the league and is senior recreation leader for Adult Soccer for the city of Carlsbad and the Trust Program, thanked the league and its players for a fine season.
San Diego United Head Coach Jim Smith said that this is the most competitive/recreational adult soccer league in all of North County San Diego and perhaps all of San Diego. Smith has coached competitive soccer in San Diego and on the college level for 25 years.
The league features players from all over San Diego, some have played professionally with the San Diego Sockers and Major League Soccer teams, including international players from European leagues and some play for love of the game.
“All these players in the league have a lot of irons in the fire,” said Smith. Many are Marines or sailors; many are just graduating from college and on the road to success in new careers, he said.
After the win, Smith thanked all of the teams in the league for their competitive sprit and efforts, Carlsbad Adult Recreation, his players, his assistant coaches, Evann Zilka and Ryan Smith; his co-captains, Matt Quinzii and Greg Reese for a job well done.
“Soccer is on the move for everyone — the young and especially the old who still want to put their boots on and still compete,” Smith said.
