Free Family Art Day connects kids, art

OCEANSIDE — More than 200 participants showed up for the Oceanside Museum of Art’s Free Family Art Day on Jan. 16. The day connected children with art by inviting them to create crafts that mimic art that is on display.
“It’s a great chance to expose kids to art,” Fred Boyd of Oceanside said.
To compliment the Botanicals: The Photography of Imogen exhibit, materials and instructions were doled out to make wax paper stained glass leaves, water reactive colored paper flowers, crayon leaf rubbings, painted leaf prints, and photo paper sun prints of leaves. “The crafts have to do with light or the lack of light,” Dee Lolan, family program coordinator, said.
“It’s really great for kids,” Annalou Majul, museum intern, said. “Parents are at ease and do not have to worry about their kids making a mess.”
There were also family-geared tours of the museum.
Additional Free Family Art Days are scheduled for March 20, Aug. 7 and Oct. 2. For more information, visit
