Longtime teacher wins Fran Aleshire Award

SAN MARCOS — Beckie Garrett, a member of the San Marcos Unified School District Governing Board, was honored with the Fran Aleshire Award for her outstanding leadership and regional involvement at the San Diego North Economic Development Council’s annual Holiday Luncheon and Awards Presentation on Dec. 2.
Each year the Leadership North County Alumni Association presents the Fran Aleshire Award to a graduate of the program who, in the spirit of Fran Aleshire, exhibits the characteristics of great leadership. Individuals are nominated by their peers.
Garrett has served the North County region as a high school teacher for more than 30 years. During that time, she earned many awards and, in 2001, was named San Diego County Teacher of the Year. After retiring, she joined the faculty at Cal State San Marcos to inspire future teachers and train them with award-winning practices. In 2006, Garrett decided to use her wisdom and experience in a different capacity. She was elected as a member of the San Marcos Unified School District Governing Board. Just last month she was re-elected to a second four-year term.
“Being selected to receive the Fran Aleshire Leadership award is a great honor and a wonderful surprise,” Garrett said. “I’m so proud to be a part of Leadership North County. It is such a unique program in its demonstration of how all the pieces of the North County puzzle fit together, and how those pieces sometimes don’t exactly fit together perfectly.”
Leadership North County is a comprehensive leadership program by Cal State San Marcos Extended Learning to foster the growth of community leaders. The program has graduated hundreds, including several mayors, CEOs, and other public officials across North County. For more information, call (760) 750-4020 or visit www.leadershipnorthcounty.org.
