Carlsbad police gather help for homeless youth

CARLSBAD — A special charity drive is being sponsored by the Carlsbad Police Officers Association Community Outreach on behalf of students at Monarch School, an alternative-education program for homeless children in San Diego, through Dec. 16.
The organization is asking that residents donate personal care items or monetary donations and/or gift cards to the Carlsbad Police Department, 2560 Orion Way or to collection bins at the Dove Library, 1775 Dove Lane, the Cole Library 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive or the city Fire Station No. 1 1275 Carlsbad Village Drive. All gifts must be delivered to Monarch School by Dec. 16. Contact Tara Barrows to coordinate a gift drive or schedule a drop off. For more information, contact or call (619) 685-8242, ext. 235.
They are asking for pre-assembled care packages labeled for a child, teen girl or teen boy that contain shampoo/conditioner, body wash/soap, toothbrushes/toothpaste, body lotion/moisturizer, deodorant, hair gel, new socks (kid sizes 4-16/ adult sizes S-XXL) or new underwear (kid sizes 4-16/ adult sizes S-XXL). No razors, please.
Special gifts can also include AMC movie passes, iTunes gift cards, Tech Decks (finger skateboards), travel size board game, arts and craft kits, dolls and action figures, alarm clocks, make-up, nail and hair kits, perfume and cologne kits, Skull Candy headphones. They ask that contributors to remember students’ limited, living space in shelters and motels when choosing toys and gifts.
Donations of gift cards in $20 denominations are also greatly appreciated, from Target,
Ralph’s and Payless Shoes, as well as $10 denomination cards for Subway and Jack-in-the-Box.
“We also greatly appreciate unrestricted monetary donations during the holidays,” a spokesperson said. “Your contribution gives these kids access to health, vision and dental care, an enriching after-school program, nutritious meals and snacks, clothing, shoes, hygiene, tutoring and many more services throughout the year. One hundred percent of all donations are given directly to Monarch School.”
