Movies, book auctions and reading programs at city library

CARLSBAD — Summer’s here and that means more time to enjoy all that the Carlsbad City Library has to offer. July fun includes free family movies, a silent book auction, and an adult Summer Reading Program with weekly $20 gift card drawings.
Looking for summer reading? A good audiobook? A movie for the weekend? Visit Staff Favorites on the library’s website,, for dozens of recommendations. After you’ve enjoyed a book or audiobook, fill out a review card at any Library location. You’ll be entered to win a weekly $20 gift card. It’s all part of the fun of the adult Summer Reading Program, themed MyTreasures.
In July, the library is showing free family movies on Wednesdays 6 p.m.
at the Library’s 215-seat Schulman Auditorium, 1775 Dove Lane. Show dates are:
July 14: “Finding Nemo,” (Rated G)
July 21: “The Rescuers,” (Rated G)
July 28: “Surf’s Up,” (Rated PG)
There are also five library book clubs where readers can share your literary insights with other readers. Monday Night Classics Book Club reading “Tarzan of the Apes.” Tuesday Evening Book Club reading “The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century.” First Wednesday Book Club reading “Eat, Pray, Love.” First Thursday Book Club reading “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. Thursday Afternoon Book Club reading “My Father’s Tears and Other Stories.”
A silent auction is being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 17 and from 1 to 3 p.m. July 18 in the Dove Library’s Gowland Meeting Room, 1775 Dove Lane. Bid on unique, top-quality books at the Silent Auction sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
The Cinema Society of Carlsbad will host a free screening “Departures” (Rated
PG-13), winner of an Academy Award for best foreign language film, at 2 p.m.
July 10. Arrive at 1:30 p.m. for a Cinema Chat in the Schulman Auditorium, 1775 Dove Lane.
