Carlsbad Village Farmers Market salutes summer

CARLSBAD — July is National Grilling Month and the peak of the summer grilling season, according to the Hearth Patio & Barbecue Association.
“July is when the summer grilling season is in full swing so we’re putting on a luau,” said Carlsbad Farmers Market Manager Christy Johnson. “Come enjoy the island barbecue theme and make sure you take home a free copy of the Official Carlsbad Village Farmers Market ‘Summer Sensations’ grilling guide.”
The two-day Summer Sensations Luau Festivals are set from 1 to 5 p.m. for July 21 and July 24. The festivities include special summer treats, live entertainment and family fun. Grillers can be sure to get the freshest summer fruits and vegetables, including vine-ripened watermelon, freshly squeezed lemonade, summer squash blossoms and sweet nectarines. Youngsters of all ages can join in the Summer Scavenger Hunt, Bean Bag Toss and Limbo Contests to win prizes and learn about the Farmers Market. There will also be swaying hula dancers dancing to live Hawaiian ukulele music.

Some helpful grilling hints include:
— Position your grill in an open area away from buildings and high traffic.
— When lighting any grill, always keep the lid open.
— Check propane tank levels or charcoal supply before the day of the barbecue.
— Wear clothing that does not have hanging shirttails, frills or apron strings.
— Marinate foods ahead of time. Always marinate in the refrigerator, never on the counter.
— Trim the excess fat from meat to avoid flare-ups.
— Place vegetables and fruits at the outer edge of the grill to prevent burning.
— Always use long-handled barbecue utensils to avoid burns and splatters.
— To minimize the loss of juices, use tongs or spatulas to move or turn meats not a fork.
— Use a meat or “instant-read” thermometer to ensure meat is cooked thoroughly. As a guideline, poultry should be 180 degrees (breasts 170 degrees); beef, lamb, veal roasts/steaks 145 degrees to 160 degrees and any burgers and all pork should be 160 degrees.
