Oceanside celebrates Filipino-American heritage

OCEANSIDE — The colorful sights, sounds and smells of the Philippines will once again fill the Civic Center Plaza in Oceanside. The Filipino-American Cultural Association of North San Diego County, along with the Oceanside Public Library and the Friends of the Library, invite the public to a festive day of music, dance, food at the ninth annual Filipino Cultural Celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 12, at the Oceanside Civic Center Library and Plaza at 330 N. Coast Highway. This event is fully funded by the Filipino-American Cultural Association and the Friends of the Library.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “Remembering Our Past Together” and celebrates the connection between the United States and the Philippines. The event will kick-off at 10 a.m., and will be followed by a traditional costume show, highlighting clothing from the different regions of the Philippine Islands. From 11 to 11:30 a.m., children and parents can enjoy Filipino stories and folklore at story time in the Patio Courtyard.
At noon, a talent showcase will feature local artists on the Plaza stage. At 1 p.m., local dancers will perform Filipino dances from the different provinces of the Philippines. Also, contestants will be competing in three pageants for the titles of Little Miss Fil-Am, Pre-Teen Fil-Am and Mrs. Fil-Am.
Traditional Filipino food such as pancit, lumpia, and adobo will be available for sale in the plaza area from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children are invited into the courtyard throughout the day for a free craft program. The Filipino-American Cultural Association of North San Diego County was formed and established in June of 1976. It began as a social gathering of some whose mission was to preserve the Filipino cultural customs and traditions, and is now more than 300 members strong.
