Private sector funds area beach restoration

CARLSBAD — A new beach cleanup program will raise $600,000 for beach cleanup, dune restoration and educational lifeguard training for five Southern California beaches, including Carlsbad State Beach. The campaign is aimed to support the dropping public sector funds to state parks, so the private sector is supporting the efforts.
The campaign selected the busiest beaches in Southern California including Carlsbad State Beach, plus Huntington, Bolsa Chica, San Onofre and Malibu Lagoon. Some of the beaches have needed services such as dune restoration for nearly a decade. The beach initiative also addresses visitor safety through an educational training component among seasonal lifeguards.
The campaign challenges consumers to support their local beaches while shopping at Stater Bros. supermarkets. Shoppers can make a $1 or $5 tax-deductible donation to clean-up efforts at Stater Bros. checkout stands through April 25 or online at The Web site provides educational facts about the program and offers the option to share the cause with friends, engage with fellow social media users and make an online donation to the California State Parks Foundation in support of the Care for our Coast campaign.
Additionally, the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California will donate $1 toward cleanup efforts along the California coastline when consumers purchase 10 worth of Coca-Cola products.
“Given today’s budget situation, the efforts from the private sector to enhance visitor services and the natural assets of our state park beaches are greatly appreciated,” Ruth Coleman, director of California State Parks, said. “We wouldn’t be able to implement these programs without the generous support of Stater Bros. and Coca-Cola.”
The customer donation portion of the Care for our Coast campaign in Stater Bros. Supermarkets will run through April 25. The Coca-Cola donation portion will run through May 11.
