Cardiff library gets a facelift

2010 brought heavenly rain to wash the faces of the plants, trees and shrubs and make the earth smell good, for which we are happy.
In January, the library reopened after being closed for some updates which you will note when you visit. The checkout counter gave way to book/video return slots, the checkout counter is now by the south door and a self checkout is at the north entrances. Shelves are rearranged and things might not be in their familiar spots but the same smiling staff is there to greet you and help you so please be patient during our facelift and continue to enjoy our library as the improvements are being made. Story time or craft time is at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Grandma Betsy will reading on Tuesdays at 11 a.m.
Also, if you brought your child to see Santa Claus, be sure to check out the video on our Web site.
In March the library will celebrate 96 years of serving this community and plans are under way for the expansion of the community room and children’s area as well as a demonstration garden that will occupy the spot where the pine trees once stood..
The Friends support group, which will be 26 years old in April. will be holding its spring half-price book sale from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 13. Wear your London/ Paris/Rome/Cardiff-by-the-Sea name drop T-shirt and take home a free book. New members will also get a free book that day.
T-shirts are available at Postal Annex of Cardiff with proceeds going to the Friends and they will be on sale at the book sale.
The Friends’ Web site at can keep you abreast of happenings and watch for the new scholarship information. If you know a graduating senior in the 92007 or 92024 zip codes, encourage them to apply for one of the Friends 4 $1,000 scholarships this spring.
The Book Nook is open during library hours and we need your books.
Around the corner at 124 Aberdeen Ave, VG’s Shopping Center, the Cardiff Chamber has now officially become the Cardiff 101 MainStreet Association, They held their annual membership drive in February, and a springtime mixer is being planned with the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy. Dog Days is scheduled for the second Saturday in August and the second annual Rob Machado Surf Experience is slated for the first weekend in October.
Stop in on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and say “Hi” to Tess and check out their new merchandise.
Holiday time brought a communique from one Christopher Dawson, a Cardiff, Wales, businessman who had read the history of Cardiff-by-the-Sea on the chamber Web page. He is now proudly wearing a London/Paris/Rome/Tee. The winter there is the worst in 30 years with all the snow. Sharing a name is one thing, glad we don’t have to share the weather.
With new library additions, chamber events planned and remembering to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink, we look forward to another great year in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, the place we proudly call home.
