Oceanside looking for a few good volunteer drivers

OCEANSIDE — Oceanside is looking for volunteer drivers with sound automobiles to help transport seniors to doctor appointments and weekly errands around town. The free door-to-door transportation service for seniors kicked off six months ago with 10 volunteer drivers. The goal is recruit a total of 20 to 25 drivers.
“We’re looking for friendly people with a positive outlook,” Eileen Turk, Oceanside Parks and Recreation division manager, said.
There are no minimum hours required of volunteer drivers. Volunteer coordinator Cheryl Stone arranges weekly driving routes based on seniors’ needs and drivers’ availability. “One volunteer puts in 20 hours a week, another volunteers four hours a month,” Turk said.
Drivers are reimbursed for gas mileage and are rewarded by helping local seniors. “A driver who brings a senior shopping can do some shopping themselves,” Turk said. “If you’re going to go anyway why not bring a senior with you?”
The door-to-door service is free of charge for seniors who are no longer able to drive. This supplements the senior taxi service and senior shuttle that Oceanside offers seniors at a small fee.
Those interested in volunteering can apply at Oceanside’s Country Club Senior Center. Fingerprinting and DMV checks of volunteers are required. For more information on the program, contact Cheryl Stone at (760) 435-5251.
